threshold.
Rainer Neuwirth's works examine how inner states become visible—and how differently people can perceive the same world. Faces and bodies are not treated as likenesses, but as sites of tension between self-image, external perception and lived experience.
Ink establishes the line; felt-tip pen and gouache intensify it through deliberate colour contrasts. Gaze, posture and disruption carry the narrative. The result is a direct visual language in which vulnerability, resistance, curiosity and exhaustion can coexist without being resolved into a single meaning.

before something becomes definite.”
Rainer Neuwirth was born in Horn, Austria, in 1987 and lives in Ybbs an der Donau. He began his self-taught artistic practice in 2026. Working primarily on paper, he concentrates on portraiture and the human figure as carriers of psychological and social experience.
His current body of work brings individual perspectives into relation: age, resilience, exhaustion, faith, self-staging and the longing to be seen. The works form an open, growing archive of human attitudes. Neuwirth's aim is not to explain his figures, but to preserve their contradictions and give the viewer space for an encounter of their own.
